WILDERNESS
by James Porter
The biting wind whipped across the frozen tundra, stinging exposed skin and threatening to extinguish the flickering flame of hope within Elias. He had been alone for weeks, ever since the plane crash that had scattered his life across the unforgiving Alaskan wilderness.
Elias, a city dweller by birth and trade, had always felt a pull towards the untamed. He'd romanticized the idea of self-sufficiency, of living off the land, but reality was a harsh mistress. His initial supplies had dwindled quickly, forcing him to learn the brutal lessons of survival.
He learned to trap small animals, to identify edible plants, and to build a shelter that offered meager protection against the relentless cold. Each day was a battle against the elements, a test of his will and resilience.
One evening, as the aurora borealis danced across the sky in a breathtaking display of color, Elias felt a profound shift within himself. The fear and desperation that had consumed him began to recede, replaced by a sense of peace and connection to the land. He was no longer just surviving; he was becoming a part of the wilderness.
Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months. Elias adapted, evolved, and found a strength he never knew he possessed. He learned the language of the wilderness, understanding its rhythms and respecting its power.
Then, one crisp morning, he heard the distant drone of an engine. Hope surged through him, a powerful wave that threatened to overwhelm him. He scrambled to the highest point he could find, waving his arms and shouting until his voice cracked.
The plane circled, dipped its wings, and then landed on a nearby frozen lake. Elias had been found.
As he boarded the plane, leaving behind the wilderness that had both tested and transformed him, Elias knew that a part of him would forever remain in the heart of Alaska. He had entered the wilderness a lost man, but he was leaving a survivor, forever changed by his experience.
